Junghans Max Bill Regulator Bauhaus - 27/4493.02

Distinctive and wonderfully unconventional, the Junghans max bill Regulator Bauhaus (ref. 27/4493.02) reimagines how time is read. A central minute hand takes center stage while the hours and seconds move on their own separate displays, all set on a matt white dial with luminous dots and matt silver hands accented in Bauhaus red, plus a date shown in red.

The self-winding J800.5 movement powers this regulator layout with up to 38 hours of power reserve and can be seen through a printed glass case back, secured by four screws, with a partially transparent Bauhaus logo. The matt stainless steel case measures 40mm by 10.9mm and is crowned with a domed, anti-reflective sapphire crystal. A black leather strap with a matt stainless steel buckle and 5 bar water resistance complete an automatic watch that is as intriguing as it is elegant.

Timepiece History

Junghans was founded on April 14, 1861, in Schramberg in Germany's Black Forest, when Erhard Junghans and his brother-in-law, Jakob Zeller-Tobler, set up a firm making parts for large Black Forest clocks; the first complete Junghans clocks followed in 1866. By 1903, Junghans had grown into the largest clock manufacturer in the world, and in 1918 it completed its nine-level terrace building, the Terrassenbau, which today houses the Junghans Terrassenbau Museum. Owned by the Steim family since 2009, Junghans remains based in Schramberg today.

Junghans began working with the Bauhaus-trained artist and architect Max Bill in 1956, and in 1961 Bill designed Junghans' first line of mechanical wristwatches, which is still produced in nearly the same form. The max bill Regulator shows the minutes centrally, with the hours and seconds on auxiliary dials at 12 and 6, a layout Junghans says was inspired by the regulator wall clocks once used to regulate wristwatches.

In April 2024 Junghans introduced the Regulator as the new addition to the max bill Bauhaus series, alongside the Chronoscope and the Automatic, all three sharing a matt steel case, a white dial and red accents on the hands and date. That red recalls the Bauhaus building in Dessau: the book max bill am Bauhaus, quoted by Junghans, describes the student dormitory's balcony doors as minium-red accents.
